That’s what they say and there is no doubt that any camera is better than no camera if you’re wanting to capture the moment. The thing is, the one we generally have with us all the time is on our phone. A few years ago I was questioning why two very similar phones were so different in price, the sales assistant stated that the camera on the cheaper one was downgraded from the expensive version. “I have a camera if I want a camera” I responded, “I want a phone!?!” Now a few years on, seeing the incredible images that are possible with camera phones, I am thinking of changing my phone to get a better camera! ‘Phoneography’ allows us to grab quickly images we see wherever we are. The scene in the image below struck me and I reached for the phone despite the fact my XE-1 with 35mm f1.4 was in my bag. Largely I think, just to try to see what the image looked like, also because walking around an airport with a ‘proper’ camera raises some querying looks. Perhaps also that I intuitively knew that I needed the wider angle the phone could give me, or possibly just because I was too lazy to take the XE-1 out of my bag?! Either way, a quick couple of shots, a choice of one and a quick edit in snapseed and I was done; no-one batted an eyelid. The beauty of using a phone. Things have moved on. Looks like I have too.
