B&W light 1

I’m going to start with these. Because they feel easy to discuss.

Ricoh KR10super 28-70mm Kosmofoto 100 EI100

I took both these shots a few days apart on a recent trip to France. Whilst visiting a chateau the light in this attic room grabbed my attention and the old chair and clutter seemed like ideal subject matter. I had Kosmofoto 100 loaded and the strong contrast would I thought, suit it well. I think it turned out to be the case. I have done nothing to this in post-processing, simply uploaded the scanned file. I like the contrast range and even like the flaring and burning out of the highlight from the window. I thought about toning this down or cropping it out but for me, it is part of the story of the picture. Covering the window with your hand, the image is solely about the chair and other artifacts. The light bursting through the window adds drama to the image, almost ‘shouting’ in what would otherwise be a tranquil scene. The tonal range on the rear wall is lovely I think and the old wicker recliner gives a sense of calm and history with perhaps a story to tell.

Fujifilm X-E1 18-55mm @23mm f8 1/70 ISO400

This one I find very tranquil. Although an empty corner of a room, the light and tones are again lovely I think. This one is digital, but again, I dont think I’ve done anything to it, it’s as it came out of camera with my usual b&w jpeg settings. A ‘quieter’ image than the previous they are still similar in my eyes and the graphic composition of this image grows on me the more I look at it. The rounded wall on the right, curving away from us, adds something to this image but so does the paneling of the door mirrored in the window panels and shutter and the overall feel of the image for me is one of peace and harmony.
