New inspiration

It’s been more than 17months since my last post. I always thought that I would continue here but wasn’t sure what I had to say. I also wasn’t happy with the way the website looked or worked for me.

I have since had a go at refreshing the site and it functions a little better for me now even if I’m still not that enamoured with it. At the end of the day, I need it to serve my purpose and allow me to express myself rather than it be a product of my creative expression in itself. Simply, I don’t have hours to spend on this and would rather spend the time focussing on my photographic and literary output.

Since deciding to try again at posting here I have struggled to think of an appropriate way to ‘restart’. It seemed odd not to recognise the extended hiatus, I couldnt just start posting again with a general photo and comment could I? Still unsure how to break the deadlock, I came across this article by Tim Clinch in Black & White Photography magazine and thought the quotation therein summed up where I was at, at this point in time, representing a good place to restart. So here it is, and all being well I’ll post some new imagery and thoughts here in the coming months.

“Many people look at their photographic challenges as a mountain, but all they see is the summit. Now, there is nothing wrong with aiming high and it’s something I positively encourage…..but I am absolutely determined to enjoy the journey. [In my Mum’s words, ‘It is better to travel hopefully than to arrive’.] And you know what? It’s been a long and eventful journey. Yes, it’s been a bit bumpy at times. Yes, there have been a few dangerous bends along the way. Yes, the car has broken down a few times on the way and run out of petrol more times than I care to admit and the potholes have resulted in many, many punctures. But the views! The memories, the friendships I’ve made and the sheer joy of getting out there on the open road of photography, a tank full of gas, roof down and sunglasses on, have made every last minute of it worthwhile. So aim high, and if you never reach the summit, it doesn’t really matter, just keep going and make damn sure you enjoy the journey.”. Tim Clinch, Black and White Photography Magazine No.268
