Seeing the current cover photo of B&W Photography (issue 270 Oct ’22) I was brought back to this photo I captured which had caught my eye whilst crossing my local street. A spooky bit of premonition or pre-homage?!

I don’t know why I found this interesting but it caught my eye and I stopped, whilst making sure I wouldn’t be run over, and captured the image on my phone. Something about how the leaf had been perfectly compressed and was being made as one with the tarmac showing through it, just seemed to harmonise the composition and I knew immediately it was a B&W shot.

Nice to see the validation of the concept in the magazine image, although I think the more naturalistic cover photo and curled olive leaf lift that photo to a level above the tarmac!
