March 2022 and I was heading up to Ardnamurchan on a photography retreat, a trip to put the treat in retreat. Normally a B&W stalwart I was surprised to find myself looking at B&W imagery from there thinking “I wonder what the colours were like in that?”. I envisaged subtle colours in the lichen covered rocks and decaying leaves that spoke to me through the greys of the imagery. I decided to look out for this whilst I was up there, a strategy which, once there, I then feared might be ‘colouring’ my response to the place and biasing or forcing my image making. However, I was also ‘seeing’ in black and white and making imagery dedicated to that and with a little encouragement, I carried on.
Perhaps the nice weather days helped, but to me, the resulting images highlight how the natural colours of the place can shine through. Even on the days when the light was flatter, the subtle colours of the place show themselves. Below are a selection of images from this collection.
