Postcards from Saltfleet

Saltfleet is a seaside village on the east coast of Lincolnshire away from the crowds of nearby resorts. It has an extensive saltmarsh, a creek for local fishing boats and a nearby ruined but maintained church. The surrounding arable fields are a small insight into the farming community for which the county is known.

These images are my response to the place one weekend in May 2023 whilst on a photowalk with foto-friends and camping with family and friends. Of particular note for me are the wide-open expanses of beach, saltmarsh and sky and the subtle but characterful texture and colour in both. I particularly connect with the blue-green-brown colour pallet, cloud structure and ground detail in the salt marsh images. The black and white images emphasise the tonal range and more considered yet sombre tone when compared to the colour images, perhaps reflecting the cool, windy weather on the day.

Some images depict St. Botolph’s church at Skidbrooke. Captured in black and white with its graffiti daubed walls and arrestingly inscribed gravestones, this ruined church still projects the air of grandeur and importance to the local community it would have had in its prime, whilst quietly succumbing to the rigours of its age and modernity.

These ‘postcards’ I hope convey a sense of place such that the viewer might consider their own feeling and response to the location.
